WordOwl is a custom search engine, built to store and retrieve information on online webcomics.
It is maintained and developed by Pete Spicer.
WordOwl was started in February 2008, and built in PHP and Sphinx, with supporting tools and development also using a MySQL backend. The blog is powered by WordPress.
Each webcomic that is featured here has the permission of its creator(s) (more details), so there is no issue around copyright in that respect. Although predominantly this happens with Pete contacting the artist(s) of a webcomic, if you're a webcomic artist who is interested in WordOwl has to offer, please contact Pete (contact details are in the Frequently Asked Questions.)
All of the strips are transcribed by Pete or his partner Liz, which does help maintain a level of consistency between transcriptions, and transcriptions are made into a specialist data format designed to manage webcomic details.
WordOwl can also provide integration into other comic websites via XML-RPC APIs.
